The Breakdown:
-
1. Emotional Regulation Skills Training
We provide psychoeducation and teach specific emotion regulation skills, such as identifying and labeling emotions, understanding the function of emotions, and developing healthy coping strategies to manage intense emotions. This may involve helping the individual to develop awareness of their emotional experiences, learn how to tolerate distress, and regulate emotions in a healthy and adaptive manner.
-
2. Cognitive-BehavioralTherapy (CBT)
CBT is a commonly used therapeutic approach that can be effective in addressing emotional dysregulation. We may work with the individual to identify and modify maladaptive thought patterns and beliefs that contribute to emotional dysregulation. By challenging and changing negative or distorted thinking patterns, the individual can develop more balanced and realistic perspectives, which can help regulate their emotions more effectively.
-
3. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
DBT is a specialized form of therapy that focuses on improving emotional regulation, among other things. It emphasizes skills training in areas such as mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. We may use DBT techniques to help the individual build a foundation of emotional resilience and develop healthy strategies for managing emotional distress.

4. Trauma-Informed Therapy
For individuals who have experienced trauma, emotional dysregulation may be a common symptom. We offer trauma-informed therapy which may use techniques such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), trauma-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy (TF-CBT), or somatic experiencing to help individuals process and regulate their emotions related to the traumatic experiences.
-
5. Mindfulness-Based Approaches
Mindfulness techniques, such as mindfulness meditation and body awareness, can help individuals develop greater awareness and acceptance of their emotions without judgment. We may use mindfulness-based approaches to help individuals develop mindfulness skills, which can enhance emotional regulation by promoting present-moment awareness and reducing reactivity to emotions.
-
6. Interpersonal Skills Training
Dysregulated emotions can often impact relationships with others. We provide interpersonal skills training to help individuals improve their communication, assertiveness, and relationship-building skills. By developing healthier relationships, individuals may experience increased support and stability in their lives, which can contribute to improved emotional regulation.

7. Self-care and Lifestyle Changes
We work with the individual to identify and make changes in their lifestyle that can support optimal well-being, such as improving sleep habits, managing stress, engaging in regular physical exercise, and practicing self-care.
